AJEA: Entry Categories

1. Breaking News Reporting

This award recognizes a media house which captures events accurately as they occur, provides context immediately after, and expounds on its impact after the initial coverage.

2. Environment and Climate Change Reporting

This award recognizes stories that demonstrate in-depth knowledge on new developments in environmental conservation, climate change and its impact on human activities.

3. Best Investigative Story

This award recognizes stories that are well researched and go beyond the ordinary in terms of research and revelation of additional data/information on matters of public interest.

4. Blue Economy and Business Reporting

This award recognizes stories that are exceptional in raising awareness, promoting innovation, and advancing sustainable practices in the use of ocean resources, fair business practices, business set ups that impact communities economic power.

5. Digital Superhighway and innovation reporting

This award recognizes outstanding stories on technological advancement, innovations and creative use of information, communication and technological applications.

6. Development and Public Affairs Reporting

This award recognizes well researched stories on population issues as well as migration, urbanisation, infrastructure, the extractive industry, arts and culture, poverty alleviation, civic engagement, education, government policies and political processes.

7. Photojournalist of the Year

This award recognizes photographers who present captivating images that engage audiences. Such images should tell a story, depict the context and perspective of the events captured. Photographers must submit a portfolio of at least 6 published photographs from different events or a story sequence.

8. Videographer of the Year

This award recognizes videographers who record captivating images that engage audiences. Such images should tell the story and depict the context and perspective of the events captured. Videographers must submit at least two (2) videos of different events or stories.

9. Podcast of the Year

This award recognizes a digital audio or audio-visual file discussing a pertinent public issue in a professional and creative manner.

10. Agriculture and Food Security

This award recognizes stories that demonstrate a deep understanding of agriculture and provide in-depth reporting on key issues such as policies, research and innovations, market dynamics, climate change, access to inputs and markets and social-economic aspects

11. Sports Reporting

This award recognizes exceptional coverage of sports events, profiles, analysis of sports related issues, or investigations into sports organisations.

12. Health and Medical Reporting

This award recognizes interpretative stories that go beyond medical terms to inform the public on health and medical issues.

13. Best Television Production

This award recognizes a media house whose crew creatively produce radio show, programme or feature professionally done, and demonstrates impact on a public interest matter. It recognizes the research, story development, use of sound effects, interview and production techniques, use of music and effects, graphics and post production skills that go into the making of an effective and engaging audio-visual production.

14. Best Radio Production

This award recognizes a media house whose crew creatively produce radio show, programme or feature professionally done, and demonstrates impact on a public interest matter. It recognizes the research, story development, interview and production technics, use of music and effects, and post production skills that go into the making of an effective and engaging radio production

15. Illustrator of the Year

This award recognizes artistic creativity and presentation through cartoons and illustrations that clearly make commentary or opinion, and present outstanding quality work and an in-depth representation of topical issues of public interest

16. Gender Reporting

This award recognizes stories that clearly demonstrate an understanding of issues that seek to promote gender equity, equality and empowerment

17. Governance Reporting

This award recognizes stories geared towards contributing to the country’s sustainable development, promoting national values and principles of governance, upholding integrity, the fight against corruption, promotion of the rule of law, ethical practices and national cohesion in matters of governance. These include preservation of human rights, fair business practices, and compensation for violated individuals or communities among others.

18. Media Freedom

This category will be determined by a panel set up to review nominations who have contributed immensely to press freedom. Editors will be invited to nominate candidates backed by evidence. The award is presented to a person who has proof of outstanding, consistency and has shown extraordinary sustained achievement or effort in the cause of press freedom
